Job Description:

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Holistic Climate Change Impact Area within Smart Places Cluster . The incumbent will be responsible for conducting research and analyses of climate change adaptation policy and practice in South Africa. The duration of this contract is a minimum of twelve (12) months. This position is based in Pretoria.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead existing projects on South Africa’s climate change adaptation policies and practise;
  • Initiate and contribute to research and development (R&D) funding proposals on climate change adaptation;
  • Provide research direction to the Impact Area on South Africa’s key and strategic climate change adaptation policies and practise;
  • Conduct research and analyses on climate change adaptation and practise in South Africa and generate and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals with a good impact factor;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with collaborators in R&D on climate change adaptation nationally and internationally;
  • Supervise/mentor junior colleagues, researchers, students and interns in the relevant areas of expertise.
  • Design, develop and implement an approach to identify, monitor and evaluate climate change adaptation policy and practice in South Africa;
  • Report and present accurate and insightful latest trends in climate change policy and practice in South Africa to internal and external stakeholders;

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work as part of a team, as a key member, influencing decisions and reacting positively to challenges;
  • Strong organization and analytical skills;
  • Sound understanding of the interconnection between climate change adaptation policy and practise;
  • Good record of accomplishment and recognition for quality research outputs and advanced concept implementation;
  • Experience in funds acquisition would be advantageous;
  • Experience in presenting and communicating research approaches, concepts and outcomes at conferences or industry forums Sound understanding of the link between national climate change adaptation response with United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adaptation processes;
  • Ability to create clear and accurate technical and analytical reports;
  • Ability to analyse data obtained from different sources;
  • Understanding of responsible South Africa’s climate change adaptation regulatory framework;
  • Sound understanding of the climate adaptation concepts;
  • A Doctoral degree in Environmental Science or a related field; with t wo years experience in conducting and supervising studies related to climate change adaptation or related fields would be advantageous;
  • Experience in project management;
  • Ability to use geospatial techniques would be advantageous;
  • Ability to engage professionally and confidently with a wide variety of stakeholders in the private, public and non-profit sectors, and to build partnerships and manage collaborative initiatives;
