Job Description:

We are looking for a motivated person who is able to work independently within a dynamic research environment. The Senior Research Officer will be based at the UCT Neuroscience Institute at Groote Schuur Hospital. They will work closely with the WT RDP co-investigators A/Prof Jantina de Vries and Prof Francis Nyamnjoh. A fulltime administrator will support the SRO.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Co-ordinating an academic retreat every six months, including identification of topics and participants, agenda development and supervision of all administrative arrangements
  • Mentor junior members of the research team, including postgraduate students where appropriate
  • Lead original research on a topic of relevance to the WT RDP (namely relational ontology, academic activism and epistemic justice in bioethics)
  • Liaison with finance and procurement offices for administration of financial aspects of research projects
  • Developing and maintaining an online platform that brings together a community of African humanities scholars working on topics relating to new and emerging health technologies
  • Organising regular online events on the platform, including webinars, transferable skills courses, mentorship opportunities and so forth
  • Supervise or co-supervise MSc and possibly PhD students and teach selected courses on a new MSc in Bioethics program that is under development
  • Managing two academic visits to UCT per year by scholars in the African humanities including advertising these opportunities and supervising all administrative arrangements
  • Overseeing the day-to-day running of the Wellcome Trust Research Development Programme
  • Liaison with Contracts and Innovation Office for grants and research projects
  • Managing the awarding of two small stipends annually, including advertising, managing the application process and supervising all administrative arrangements for their disbursement and completion

Job Requirements:

  • A PhD in the humanities, social sciences or bioethics, or an interdisciplinary PhD straddling health and humanities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience or willingness to develop and manage virtual platforms or social media spaces
  • A strong track record of publications and/or work in the African humanities or social sciences with preference for publications relevant to the topics of the WT RDP
  • Experience with teaching, mentoring or supervision of postgraduate students
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Experience with administration and coordination of research projects
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrable interest in new and emerging health technologies, including for instance Artificial Intelligence, genomics and neuroscience or in the three focus areas of the WT RDP (relational ontology, epistemic justice and academic activism)
  • Experience of running independent research
  • Experience with organising and managing academic meetings or workshops
